The high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Interim Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi is aimed at dealing with the severe smog crisis in the province, especially in Lahore. With daily life badly affected, the Smog Control Committee of the Punjab Cabinet will consider important decisions today.
Among the proposals under consideration is the introduction of a possible soft smog lockdown under Section 144 in Lahore. These measures include closure of schools on Friday and widespread closure of markets, gyms, cinemas and factories on Saturday.
Restaurants may limit their operations to pickup and delivery. Factories that don't comply face gagging and heavy fines. Outposts across the city are committed to implementing these measures.
Other strategies include limiting vehicular traffic, halving the number of employees in government offices and providing detailed information on smog intensity and measures recommended by environmental and health experts.
A comprehensive approach is needed to tackle the smog crisis, involving key authorities including ministers, environmental and health experts. The meeting signals concerted efforts by all sectors to prioritize public health and environmental sustainability in the face of increasing smog-related challenges in Punjab and demonstrates a proactive stance to address this critical issue.
